Study Permit in Canada: As the number of students and professionals coming to Canada increases, the Canadian government has made changes to immigration laws and study permit rules.
For many students, studying abroad is a dream that represents an opportunity to advance their higher education journey and engage with the global community, exchanging knowledge and experiences.
Canada is a highly sought-after study abroad destination for Indian students for various reasons. With the increasing influx of students and professionals, the Canadian government has implemented changes in immigration laws and study permit rules.
As students prepare to begin a new academic session in Canada, it’s important to know the necessary documents required when applying for a study permit.
Proof of Acceptance
When applying for a study permit, students must submit a letter of acceptance (LOA) provided by the school. The LOA can be in its original form or as an electronic copy.
If a school conditionally accepts a candidate, the candidate must complete certain requisite courses before starting the main study program.
In such cases, a study permit will be issued for the duration of those courses plus an additional year. Once the candidate is accepted into the main program, they must submit a new study permit application to extend their stay as a student.
Provincial attestation letter from the province or territory
Most students applying for a study permit must submit a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from the province or territory where they intend to study. However, students applying for a master’s or doctoral degree program do not need to submit a PAL.
Students are exempt from submitting a PAL if:
1) They are applying for a study permit extension
2) They have a work permit
3) They are a temporary resident who is a visiting or exchange student studying at a designated learning institution (DLI)
4) They are a temporary resident who has completed a course or program of study that is a prerequisite to enrolling at a DLI.
5) They are under a removal order but cannot be removed from Canada at this time.
6) They have a temporary resident permit valid for at least 6 months.
7) They are the family member of a foreign national who lives in Canada and is one of the following: a study permit holder, a work permit holder, a temporary resident permit holder with a permit that’s valid for at least 6 months, a member of armed forces in another country under the Visiting Forces Act, an accredited foreign government representative, a participant in certain sports activities or events, a worker in Canada who is a member of a foreign news company, and a religious worker.
Proof of Identity
Students applying for study permits must have the following:
1) A valid passport or travel document.
2) Two recent passport-size photos.
Proof of Financial Support
In addition to the basic requirements, students applying for study permits must also provide proof of financial support during their time in Canada, with a minimum of CAN $20,635 per year (excluding tuition fees) required. Those studying in Quebec will need to meet separate financial requirements.
Additional documents that may be required include:
1) A letter of explanation
2) A medical exam
3) A custodian declaration (for minors only)
4) Other documents
